9/11

I woke up this morning to a gorgeous sunrise. This photo through my hotel window doesn't do it justice. I showered, packed my suitcase and looked out the window again. This time I noticed a huge American flag hanging across the street by a fire truck, with police cars blocking the road. Beside it, seats were arranged in a park. I had no idea why, until I checked in on Twitter and saw numerous posts about 9/11. Then it hit me... Has it really been 8 years since the tragic attack? I can remember it like yesterday. 9/11/01 occurred when I was working part-time and that particular day was my off-day. I don't watch much TV and was totally oblivious until my phone started ringing. Someone called to see if I was okay since there were threats of attacks on federal buildings. What? I turned on the TV to see replays of the tragic events that occurred just minutes before. I was dating a guy that was living/working in New York and I began to panic when he didn't answer his cell phone. I prayed. An hour or so later, I had to get out of the condo and took Kyra to the park. It was oddly quiet. I learned later that all flights had been cancelled. Normally there are several planes flying overhead when we're at the park. Kyra played hard like it was any normal day, while I worried about Drew and was stunned and sad for the families of so many people that were killed that day. Eventually Drew called (he hadn't had cell phone service for a few hours) and at least that worry was relieved. But I remember being in shock for most of that day and several to follow. How tragic.

Back to today on a happier note... HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRED!!! Hope you had a great one! I returned home this afternoon and took Kyra down to the tennis courts for serving practice this evening. Caroline joined us. I enjoyed chatting with Caroline's mom while the girls practiced serving. Hope they play well tomorrow in their first tennis match!
