Well, we learned from our mistakes at the end of the 3rd school quarter. And it looks like Kyra's teacher is tightening the belt too. After having to read two chapter books in a short time period, I decided that instead of letting Kyra read whatever she wanted at night, I'm going to make her read Accelerated Reader (AR) novels in her reading range until she's finished three. Then she can go back to reading whatever she wants for the rest of the school year. After I made that decision, her teacher sent home a form, to be kept in her binder, that requires 25 minutes of reading a day and the parent has to write down the title, reading level, pages read, and initial it for Monday through Thursday of each week. Apparently, Kyra's not the only one that doesn't love to read in her class... Testing indicates that her reading capability is way above her current grade level, but she just isn't interested in reading. Hmmm, why does this sound familiar? I think I was the same way when I was her age, but now I really enjoy reading.
About a week ago I had gone through the school AR list and cross referenced it with the library and checked out 5 books that I thought she might be interested in. Of the remaining 4, she chose to start Pippi in the South Seas tonight. She seems interested so far, after reading Chapter 1.
