When we got home from school/work today, Kyra noticed the kids cookbook that I unearthed yesterday in the piles of junk in our guest bedroom/office. I suggested that she pick out a meal that she would like to make and that if we didn't have the ingredients, I would go grocery shopping tomorrow and she could make it later in the week. Of course she wanted something that we didn't have the ingredients for... But she still wanted to cook. She asked if she could make macaroni and cheese, so I said yes. I put a pot of water on the stove and then talked her through turning on the stove, told her that when it started to boil to turn the setting down to 6-7, add the pasta, and set the timer for 10 minutes. I told her that by the time the timer went off, I should be out of my shower and would talk her through the rest of the directions. She came into the bathroom no less than 3 times asking what exactly was the definition of boiling. Did little bubbles count? How about little bubbles that are coming up quickly? No... wait for the big bubbles. When I finished showering and put on clothes I returned to the kitchen to find her shaking the strainer of pasta. She said she'd read the directions on the box and could finish it on her own. Yippee!!!
Our favorite babysitter arrived at 5:45 p.m. We chatted for a few minutes before I left to go to the school for Curriculum night. In the FOCUS (gifted) meeting, I sat by Ty and we talked about doing our long run together this week. I look forward to a long run (18 miles) with friends rather than doing it alone. The FOCUS teachers reminded us of why our kid are in the gifted program. I didn't realize that only the top 4% (IQ) of kids make it into the program. They said that their job is the best of all teaching jobs because the kids are so creative and imaginative. Later in the regular classroom, it was odd having the principal sitting in the classroom (her daughter is in Kyra's class) and watching her on TV at the same time. Apparently they taped the Principal's segment earlier in the evening. Kyra's teacher went through the rules and expectations and raved about what a wonderful class she has this year. Hopefully they'll continue on best behavior! The kids wrote a newspaper front page for parents to read tonight. For the "my hero" segment, Kyra wrote that I was her hero because I'm "histarical". She went on to write that I'm very funny and make her laugh and am an amazing mom. I could tell that her dad was a little disappointed! When I returned home she asked if her dad was mad about that part; she had been worried about his reaction but was compelled to write what she truly felt. Thank you Kyra; you're AWESOME!
I returned home around 8:30 p.m. to find Kyra and the babysitter laughing. We talked a few minutes about Curriculum night as well as their adventures while I was gone. After I paid her, she said it was too much (as usual) and I responded with it's totally worth it. As she was getting ready to leave they to
ld me the "bad news". It turns out that the babysitter had slipped off her shoes and left them in the dining room shortly after she arrived. Oopps! I forgot to warn her that Riley LOVES to chew shoes! While I was away, they noticed her flip-flop in Riley's mouth. But it was too late. He had chewed off the back 1/3 of the shoe. Yikes!!! I felt horrible!!! and appologized profusely for not warning her. She said it was okay, she should have known better, and we both were grateful that it was only flip-flops rather than very expensive shoes. She joked that she would give it to her sister who has smaller feet. She left the house walking on the half-eaten shoe as we were all laughing hard. But I have to wonder if this will affect her willingness to come back next week...
Kyra's about 100 pages into the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone book. We started it a week ago, the night before school started. She wrote in her news article that it's her favorite book. How odd... Last year her friends were reading it and she had no interest. Now she loves it. Go figure...
