put my baby on an airplane

We slept late, then ate lunch at our favorite Chinese restaurant (Mah Jong), and then stopped by CVS for a few last minute supplies for Kyra's trip to Colorado. She skimmed through magazines and word puzzle books, but couldn't find anything she liked. We settled on sunscreen and lotion and snacks for the plane.

I thought we arrived at the airport in plenty of time to check in and eat, but it took much longer than anticipated to get through the "unaccompanied minor" check-in line. Looks like Kyra's not the only one that will be flying without family members tonight. While we were waiting in line, Kyra asked me if Grandma Maile still had kitties. I didn't know so I sent her a text message. When we finally made it through security and off to the gate, it was 30 minutes before departure, so I didn't think we had time to eat. Good thing we purchased a snack for the plane...  But when we arrived at the gate, we learned that the flight had been delayed. Woo hoo! Lets go grab some pasta! We ate a quick bowl of spaghetti and then returned to the gate. The flight was delayed even further because of thunder/lightning storms. I sent a text to Grandma Maile to let her know that the flight was delayed. Through various text messages, she said that her oldest kitty, Pip - 21 years young, passed away six months ago and that she was taking a pet break for a while. Kyra sent her a reply that she wanted to help her pick out a new kitty and she replied that that sounded like fun. So this picture is Kyra's response.

Kyra boarded the plane and it sat on the tarmac for a while. I sat in the gate area until it took off. It finally departed at 8:35 p.m., almost 2 hours late. I told her before she boarded that I wanted her to call me when she arrived, no matter what time it was. She wrote a note on her hand so she would remember. I sent Maile a text to let her know of the late departure. She called at 11:55 p.m. after arriving safely. Maile said she was hesitant to let her call so late, but Kyra told her that I wouldn't be able to sleep until I heard from her. Good girl. Hope she has an awesome time visiting grandmas in Colorado!
