first rose of the season; apron for teacher

For Valentines Day in 2005, I purchased a rose bush for Kyra and we planted it in front of our house. On Mother's Day that same year, we purchased a few more rose bushes to add to the collection. Each year the bushes have produced more roses and our first one this year is exceptional. It appears to have many more petals than the roses in years past. It was so gorgeous that I had to cut it and bring it inside. I was curious to compare it to prior years and looked through my photo file. To my surprise, I cut the very first rose from that bush on this exact day, April 25th, four years ago.

Yesterday afternoon, Kyra was upset. She said it wasn't fair! One of her classmates hadn't brought in the supplies to make her apron for Pioneer Day, so their teacher had given the girl the supplies that she had brought in. Mrs. Walker had intended to make herself an apron, but so graciously donated it to this girl. Kyra was mad at the girl for causing the teacher not to have an apron. I explained to Kyra that maybe the girl's parents didn't have enough money or enough free time to go shopping and that it was very sweet of Mrs. Walker to give her the needed supplies. We talked about how it's rewarding to help others when we're able to. I explained that it probably made Mrs. Walker happier to donate her supplies to a girl in need, rather than to have an apron for herself. Kyra understood, but still didn't think it was fair that Mrs. Walker would not have an apron. Kyra really enjoyed making her own apron during the past two days. So I suggested that if she would like to, we could stop by the fabric store after horse riding lessons today and purchase the supplies to make Mrs. Walker an apron. Kyra's face lit up. She was so happy and wanted to make a special one for her. So after riding lessons this morning, we went to JoAnn's and I let Kyra pick out the material of her choice. She picked a pink material with a beautiful rose pattern. She selected a light yellow blanket binding for the waist band. She has spent the entire afternoon working on this apron, while watching TV. How sweet! I'm sure Mrs. Walker will be very pleasantly surprised to receive this thoughtful gift.
