Each year at Kyra's school, every grade does some special production. In kindergarten they performed "turkey tunes". Third grade was square dancing. Which built up to fourth grade, which is Pioneer Day. Pioneer Day will be on May 1st, but a lot of work goes into preparation for it. Today was the first of two sewing days. The girls made aprons and the boys decorated bandanas with beads. As "room mom", I took the day off of work to help the class with this activity. Thankfully, two other moms were able to help too. Wow, it was a lot more work than I anticipated! I spent two and a half hours threading needles, tying knots, untying unwanted knots, providing guidance, etc. I originally thought the boys had the easier job, but it turned out that the aprons were a lot less time consuming than the bandanas. Most of the girls finished stitching the sides of their aprons in class today and only had the gathering/waistband addition left for tomorrow. The boys were slower; they finished a smaller stitching and most cut fringes for the application of beads, which they'll do tomorrow. The time period allowed for this activity was 12:45 to 3 p.m. School ends at 3:20, so as soon as Kyra finished cleaning up, we left before the car rider line blocked our car in. We were both starving and I needed stress relief so we went to Bruster's for an ice cream to celebrate getting through the first day of Pioneer sewing. Kyra's teacher let the children select their "familes" for Pioneer Day. There are 17 children in her class. Mrs. Walker's rules were simple: two boys per family, two girls per family, and one family group could have three girls since there are 9 girls and 8 boys in the class. Kyra's family consists of her best friend (Grace) another close friend (Savannah), and two boys that they get along well with (Caleb and Cameron). The decided that Caleb and Savannah will be the parents, Kyra and Cameron are twins, and Grace is the younger sister. Kyra and Cameron both have blond hair and blue eyes. They have a great group! Other groups had a little more difficulty forming. Mrs. Walker had to intervene and make a few reassignments in those. For this first sewing day, they worked together in family groups. They worked independently, but sat in family groups to help the "bonding" process. I enjoyed just listening to their chatter and watching their interactions.

Tonight I made Kyra go to swimming lessons despite her protest. I was stressed from the hours of working with her classmates and desperately needed to go for a run. There is a half-mile trail loop that surrounds the aquatic center. So after signing her in and sending her downstairs to her swimming coach, I went outside for a jog. It started sprinkling rain, but thankfully only a few sprinkles for just a few minutes. I jogged 3.3 miles and afterwards stopped to observe the new baby ducks. They were so cute! On my last lap, I saw the mother swimming across the pond with about a dozen chicks behind her. However, when I finished that lap and went for a closer look, all I could see were two. This photo was taken with my phone camera. I wish I had brought my digital camera so I could have zoomed in closer...
It was the warmest day of the year so far with a high of about 84 degrees. After swim practice we went home and I made dinner. Just as we were sitting down to eat at about 7:30 p.m., we heard pellets falling. It was hailing!!! There were quarter size pieces of ice hitting our deck! How could there be such large chunks when it was so warm today? Bizarre...
