Gratitude

After returning horses to their paddocks, Kyra and I walked slowly back towards the guest house. She was sad that the girls we met this morning were leaving. I was in throbbing pain from being bucked off a horse during a canter. As we walked, we noticed that there are basketballs in a bin next to the hoop. She wanted to stop and shoot, so I took advantage of the opportunity to attempt to stretch my back. Hope I'm not doing more harm. I tried to take my mind off the pain by taking photos of Kyra shooting hoops. A woman and her daughter approached. The woman asked if it would be okay if her daughter played too. I said sure! The woman continued walking towards the guest house and Kyra took turns shooting with the girl, who was about her age. They took turns shooting hoops until they eventually grew tired of it and we all walked back to the guest house together. The girls went into the game room of the cafeteria and I said I would meet them there shortly. I needed a few minutes in the room. The girl and her brother and mother joined us at our table for dinner. It turns out that the girl, Madi, is in 6th grade, her brother (Austin) is in 9th grade, and their mother (Sandy) had suggested to Madi earlier in the day that Kyra looked like a nice girl for Madi to play with. It turns out that they live not too far from us. What a great coincidence! The children played games in the game room after dinner. Sandy said that in their prior trips the kids have played for hours. (This is their 4th Thanksgiving here.) Since Kyra seemed to be having fun and we were all at ease, Sandy returned to her room to make some phone calls. I went to my room to lie down since I was still in intense pain. I returned to the game room to check in on them periodically and made sure Kyra had her cell phone with her. Austin said they'd return to rooms by 10 p.m. He seems like a responsible teen. And true to his word, Kyra came back into our room around 9:30. I'm so grateful that she's made new friends and that I'm not paralyzed! With the exception of my fall from a horse, this has been an amazing Thanksgiving day! Happy Thanksgiving family and friends!
