Between games at the scrimmage on Saturday, Coach Rodney told the girls that if they knew anyone else that wanted to play to please have their parent(s) contact him. It was obvious that we'd fare better with more bodies in the event several girls couldn't make a game. So as soon as he said that on Saturday, Kyra raised her hand and said she knew someone. Her classmate was interested in playing basketball and her mom had planned to sign her up for recreation league since she'd never played before. Kyra insisted (to me, not publicly) that Allyson is better than some of the girls on her team; they play basketball during recess together. I worked from home yesterday and had lunch with Kyra. In talking to Allyson, she said that her mom hadn't registered her yet. So I sent her mom an e-mail asking her to consider registering Allyson for GBL instead of recreation league. She replied thanking me for the tip and said she'd contact the coach.
Today is a holiday for me (Veterans Day). We invited Allyson to come home from school with Kyra to play since it was also an "early release day". Her mom had called the coach, but hadn't heard back from him yet. I called too and left a message. So... after playing for hours, I fed both girls and took them both to practice. Kyra's old basketball shoes fit Allyson perfectly, so I gladly gave them to her. Coach Rodney welcomed Allyson to the team and folded her into practice. She's a decent shooter, but is several weeks behind the rest of the girls. Kyra assured the coach that she'd teach Allyson the plays on the playground. I hope this turns out to be a good experience... Allyson is the Principal's daughter...
