teacher teacher

Cold shower: When I took a shower this morning, the water started out only luke warm and quickly turned cold. I just assumed that they had to shut the breaker off because of the air conditioner yesterday afternoon...

I had to give a presentation this morning; my second this month. I threw this one together quickly over the past two days. It was well received. Seems like lately, the less time I put into preparing the presentation, the better it seems to be liked. The presentation that I did on May 5th, which was mostly photos and only a few "word" slides, was my boss's boss's favorite of the year. It was mostly photos, with me talking through each slide, because I didn't have enough time to put togethier wordier slides. My boss's boss thought that it was awesome and he e-mailed it out to our entire group, saying, "At the risk of making Samantha look like the 'teacher's pet', I'd like to see more presentations that model this example." Not trying to brag, just surprised because I hadn't put too much effort into it. Go figure...

I left the office around 4 p.m. to pick up Kyra a little earlier than usual so we could pick up the puppies and be back home by 5:30 p.m., which was the time I told the a/c replacement guy that we'd be home. As I'm driving, my cell phone starts ringing. Colleen wants to know which teacher Kyra got for 5th grade. Oh boy... the busiest phone day of the year. I thought they were getting class assignments tomorrow, but I guess they sent them home a day earlier than I was expecting. Kyra will be in Mrs. McClellan's class next year. Kyra said that she's "the teacher that I've wanted ever since kindergarten". We come home to no less than 15 missed calls from her friends wanting to know what class she'll be in next year. Word travels fast and we learn that although Kyra got her wish for 5th grade teacher, her best buddies won't be with her. Colleen, Grace and Sophia have Mrs. Johnston. But she's glad that Savannah, Bryn and Elton will be in her class. Bittersweet news.

When we arrived home, we took the dogs into the bedroom so they woulnd't bother the air conditioner repair guys. They had arrived earlier and let themselves in through the unlocked basement door (planned). I sent Kyra down to swim practice while I waited for them to finish. Travis walked me through the new system and pointed out a leak at the hot water heater. That wasn't there before they started... The hot water heater is very close to the air conditioner system and he said that his associate may have bumped into the overflow valve when either removing the old system or installing the new one and caused it to leak. He made a note of it and said someone would come out tomorrow to repair it. Bummer! I mentioned that I had only cold water this morning. He checked it and said that the pilot light had been turned off yesterday. He relit it.

After he left I went down to the pool to watch the last half of Kyra's swim practice. It was almost like last summer never ended. I fell into place on a lounge chair beside Terri, Debi, Merillee and Amy. We chatted happily about new school teachers and how fast the kids are growing. It brought back pleasant memories of summers gone by. Good times!
